This term has been adopted in several different environments, leading to an assortment of definitions. The closest medical use of the term is probably provided by the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC), an organization that is a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association established to provide credentialing requirements and exams for the assortment of nursing specialties in medicine today.

The ANCC has substituted the term Nurse Executive for Nurse Administrator, which is the name given to the Master of Science in Nursing specialization in management. It is also the basic option for an MSN student, requiring no post-MSN training for specialization as is the case for some Nurse Practitioner graduates and Clinical Nurse Specialists who are working in advanced practice nursing.
