Many universities have taken their RN to MSN degree options into online education format. There are several designs for these programs as our selections below illustrate. Some schools offer the RN with an associate’s degree the opportunity to take three years and complete an MSN without an intervening bachelor’s degree. Others have the RN to MSN bridge program for students with a non-nursing degree, which then allows for online MSN enrollment. Many take their RN to MSN students through completion of a BSN on the way to advanced practice nursing study.

- Gonzaga University (*Highly Recommended!!) RN to MSN degree is designed for students who hold an Associate Degree in Nursing and are licensed RNs. The program offers specialization in Nurse Educator and Health Systems Leadership. This second area of study includes course work in regulatory requirements and integrated health systems, opening up career options in several health-related industries.
- Grand Canyon University (*Highly Recommended!!) requires that an RN have a bachelor’s degree in nursing in order to enroll in the online RN to MSN program. Specialization options include Nurse Educator, Nursing Education and Family Nurse Practitioner. Clinicals for the Nurse Practitioner option can be arranged in the student’s community.
- University of Phoenix has an online RN to BSN option which can be followed by an online MSN program in one of several fields. Specialization choices include an MSN in Informatics, a field not taught in most MSN programs, and an MSN in Health Education. There is a general MSN option and two joint degrees including the MSN/MBA and the MSN/MHA.
- Walden University offers applicants who have a diploma, associate degree in nursing, or bachelor’s degree in a discipline other than nursing and are licensed registered nurses a MSN program, provided they fulfill the general education requirements. - Sacred Heart University has an RN to MSN program that includes completion of the BSN along the way. Emerging from an online MSN program with a bachelor’s degree as well is probably the best option, as there are no academic holes in your resume when you enter the advanced practice fields.
- Jacksonville University has two areas of specialization in its online RN to MSN program. The Nursing Administration option provides the training to qualify and test for status as a Certified Nurse Executive. The Nursing Education option is applicable as a teacher in a nursing school or as an educator in a community health environment.
